CALCULATION AND ANALYSIS
Do you work in one of the thousands of companies that develop and produce new products every day? Then you also know that testing and prototypes are essential to ensure that the quality, functionality, and efficiency of the new product are top-notch. At the same time, you’re aware that testing and prototypes are costly, and in our competitive society, there isn’t always time to test if you want to be the first to market with a great product.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) enables you to minimize the number of both prototypes and tests while maximizing the product's performance. This concept is known as a digital twin. A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical product or system, sharing characteristics with the physical product, such as dimensions and specifications, allowing for faster and more cost-effective testing and optimization. This is where Kirkholm’s team of CFD experts can assist with the precise CFD calculations, analyses, and simulations your project requires.
CFD is an abbreviation for Computational Fluid Dynamic. It is a method within Fluid Mechanics where computer calculations are used to investigate gas and liquid flows. The calculations are complex, but at the same time also extremely effective in determining flow- and thermodynamic-related phenomena.
These calculations and simulations provide a unique insight into the product's flow conditions, which would otherwise have required expensive measuring equipment, expensive prototypes, time-consuming tests and subsequent data processing. CFD simulations cannot stand 100% alone, and prototypes and tests cannot be avoided, but with the help of CFD, they can be minimized.
Kirkholm uses Simcenter STAR-CCM+ as CFD software, because it is an excellent platform for making very complex simulations. Furthermore, it streamlines the path from CAD model to simulation result, as well as the possibilities for automation of design optimization directly in the CFD software.
It is especially the possibilities for simulations with moving objects, multiphase flow and particle flow that made us choose Simcenter STAR-CCM+.
CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is a tool that can provide valuable insights for those working with fluid and gas flows—such as in ventilation systems, piping, or electronics production. While predicting the future is notoriously difficult, with CFD, it’s actually possible to obtain concrete answers on how your product will behave.
CFD saves you time and money that would otherwise be spent on testing, prototypes, and laboratory experiments. The development phase can be significantly shortened since it takes place via computer simulations rather than with physical prototypes. Additionally, it’s easy to test how the product will react under various conditions and situations. By simulating the product, you also minimize the risk of errors and breakdowns, as it’s possible to identify and correct them using CFD.
To fully benefit from CFD, it’s crucial to incorporate the tool early in the process. This allows for continuous evaluation of the design, implementation of any changes, and correction of critical parameters. However, this shouldn’t stop you from using CFD in your current project, as CFD can add value throughout the entire development process.
Once you have gone through the CFD simulations, you are ready to launch the product. The advantage is that you have a better understanding of how it will react and perform.
By integrating CFD into your development process, you can gain greater insights, reduce costs, and accelerate your time to market. CFD is an indispensable tool that can give you a significant competitive advantage.
