FEA - OPTIMIZATION AND VERIFICATION

Kirkholm delivers advanced solutions within Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for e.g. the wind turbine industry. Here we specialize in optimizing and verifying structural components, from simple strength and fatigue analyzes to complex simulations such as shock calculations, harmonic movements and random vibrations. Our precise analyzes ensure that the products meet the highest international standards, such as IEC 60721-3-2, which is crucial for both reliability and durability in demanding offshore environments.

Advanced FEA within the wind turbine industry

- Optimization and verification of components

for offshore wind turbines

Trough several projects Kirkholm have helped customers in the wind turbine industry to ensure structural integrity and optimize the design of critical components using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Project challenges

The customers needed to verify the strength and fatigue life of large steel structures subjected to various loading scenarios in offshore environments. This included the design and analysis of enclosures and suspensions requiring extensive structural verifications to ensure reliability and durability under extreme conditions.

Solutions

Our capabilities range widely from simpler structural analyzes for strength and fatigue verification, to more complex fatigue analyzes based on Markov matrices and vibrations, to dynamic analyzes such as explosion simulations.

Among other things, we have experience with applications such as design and analysis of enclosures and suspensions for offshore wind turbines that require strict structural verifications. In addition, we have carried out advanced calculations such as shock calculations, harmonic movements and random vibration simulations, all based on eigenvalue analysis and international standards such as IEC 60721-3-2.

Results

Our precise and comprehensive FEA analyzes confirmed the strength and fatigue life of the structural components, giving customers peace of mind and assurance that their products could meet the most demanding standards. This has contributed to reliability and durability in offshore wind turbine projects. Over the years, we have, among other things, helped customers with tasks and projects such as:

  • Maximum utilization of bolts: Optimized bolt connections for material savings
  • Design and optimization of wind turbine tower wall brackets: Extended life and reduced maintenance
  • Fatigue in base material and welds: Prevented future structural failures.

To illustrate some of our work, below you see a modal analysis of a wind turbine tower in a horizontal configuration supported as for road and sea transport. The modal analysis can be used for further analysis of e.g. random vibrations, harmonic movements/accelerations or shock loading.
